PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG)

Starting the battle royale craze in 2017 PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) quickly commanded an audience of millions. Subsequent to its success on Xbox One and Windows the game was released on mobile devices with a free price tag. Based on a mod created by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene for ARMA PUBG split off from the original game to be a paid standalone experience. While it remains a paid game for Xbox One and Windows the release of a mobile version in early 2018 saw the game enter the free to play market on iOS and Android platforms. The premise for PUBG which has now been adapted by various other games sees 100 players jumping into an island where scavenging for equipment and eliminating other players is the primary goal to stand alone (or with your team) as the victor. To encourage combat the available area that is safe constantly decreases over time forcing players into a smaller and smaller combat area. While survival is entirely possible outside the safezone, damage makes it impractical for extended periods of time. The original map spans a size of 8 by 8 kilometres. Eventually a second game map was added to PUBG with plans for further maps with different biomes and sizes for a varied experience. To separate yourself from other players can obtain cosmetic items through gameplay. Once landed buildings and the various other game locations hide weapons, armour and even vehicles which can be utilised to claim victory. These spawns are dynamic and change with each game which when combined with different players each game creates plenty of variety. Killed enemies will drop acquired loot allowing the killer or an opportunistic player to add their equipment to their own. Summary: The original mod recreated as a stand alone title. Compete against 99 other players to stand victorious. Different maps to create new experiences each game. Various weapon types and equipment to scavenge. Available on Windows and Xbox One with a free to play mobile version.
